Will social media ever die

While I am sure there are times when you dislike social media or have chosen to ignore it and hope it goes away.

The fact remains that after all these years it is not going anywhere.

Standout social platforms continue to grow and they continue to give us all a way to market our businesses in an extremely cost-effective way.

As social media is not going anywhere all small business owners need to embrace it and use it to our benefit. It can be the perfect tool to grow the online exposure of your business, engage with customers and take your business to the next level. All while remaining in front of and top of mind to your ideal clients.

Do you have a social media strategy that aligns with your business?

When you are running your business, ignoring social media can be incredibly detrimental to your ideal clients being able to find you. Remember that while you are missing from your client’s social media your competitor’s businesses are getting in front of your customers.

If you are deciding to ignore social media you are also ignoring an ability to pursue your business goals. For example – Are one of your business goals to share your knowledge or skills? Your website alone is not enough exposure.

What goals can be achieved with social media

As you may be aware social media has changed both the way we interact online and the way that we can market our businesses. You need to ensure your shared content is relevant, engaging and consistent.

The ultimate social media goal is to convert your followers into customers.

Your goals can be:

  • To educate your followers
  • To inspire your followers
  • Create a community that leads to sales
  • Increase your sales
  • To share discount codes or promotions
  • To showcase how to use new products
  • A reminder about your services
  • all of the above

Which platforms are the best

It is important to remember that not all social media is created equally. Some are better than others for certain types of businesses.

Facebook remains the number one platform, however, if you have a highly visual business your time may be better focussed on Instagram. Many businesses choose both Facebook and Instagram and if they are a B2B business then LinkedIn should really be in the mix. Don’t forget Pinterest too as this platform has great reach and a lot of very active users.

Ultimately you need to think about your ideal clients and be on the social media that they are using. Remember that even the largest organisations are run by people – where are these people when they are using social media?

Remember your style and be engaging

Your business has a certain style and this should be emulated on social media. The images, tone of the language you use and even emoji’s should all make sense for your business. This can be as casual and funny as you are or it can be formal to match you and your business.

Social media is just that, it is social. Make sure you respond to comments and messages. Reply to reviews and also take the time to comment on other peoples social media. One of the worst things you can do is to ignore your followers.

Keep it real

You are not going to have thousands of followers overnight when you only just get started. Just like any other aspect of your business, it takes time, commitment and effort.

Social media should not be an afterthought it should be one of your key marketing strategies. If you don’t have the time to manage it yourself then you should be outsourcing the management of it so that you remain consistent online. if someone goes to your Facebook page, you don’t want the most recent post to be from months or even years ago.

Will social media ever die

Personally, I think it will continue to evolve and over time there will be new channels to choose from but it is going to be a part of our personal and business lives.

There is no time like now to work on improving your presence online and social media provides the perfect tools to do that.
