How to be unpopular in Micro Business
Microbusiness – A business that operates on a very small scale
So, perhaps you already are or you are planning to be a micro business in the future.
- Are coming from the corporate world and you are just plain sick of working for someone else
- You have decided that you want to change your lifestyle
- The hard work you put in should benefit you and not someone else
- Working 8-am to 8-pm should benefit you
- Always being on call should be rewarded by the fact it is your business and not someone else who owns it
In this blog, I way to give advice both to existing micro-business owners and to new micro business owners. It is never too early or too late to get things organised and do things better. Being in a small or micro business is hard work and not something that should be considered an easy choice. It can, however, be incredibly rewarding both personally and professionally.
It is very easy to be unpopular in micro-business – You create a business and no one buys what you have. Chances are you have the best product or service in the world, but if you have no customers – you don’t have a business either.
If you want to know how to be unpopular in micro-business – don’t read this blog. If however, you would like to be found and be popular in your micro business – read on.

Finding Popularity – The Plan
Personally, I am not a fan of large convoluted business plans. Although they can have their place, particularly when you are looking at getting finance, a grant or similar.
If you are going to be self-employed it is a good idea to have some sort of a plan.
Keep your plan simple
- What is it?
- Who will buy it?
- What is the benefit of it?
- How will it be delivered?
What is it?
What are you selling? Is it a product, a series of products, a service, a series of services? Be very specific and detailed about this so you can understand your idea fully.
Who will buy it?
This is your ideal client – What do they look like, are they a business or individual? Where do they live or work, what are their interests?
This is probably the most important question you will ever answer about your business. You must clearly understand who will buy the bulk of what you are selling? The clearer the picture you have, the easier it will be to sell to them.
What is the benefit of it?
When you consider your product/s or service/s what benefit does the client/customer receive? Why will they benefit the most by purchasing from you? What makes you so special?
How will it be delivered?
Where does your ideal client get what you have? Is it online, in-store, in person etc. and how will they find you? Once they find you are there barriers to overcome?
Now you have a simple plan it can be expanded to include anything else you need. If you cannot clearly answer all these questions then get some advice and help to do so. Without the above answers, at a bare minimum, you will struggle to be in business.
Clients/Customers
It is vital that you fully and completely understand the mindset of your ideal clients.
- Who they are, how they benefit from your product or service and how they will receive it. Remember that consumers are smart and they can research anything before buying. What will make them choose to buy from you?
Selling
Selling is not about what you sell, but what you make others FEEL about what you sell – the benefit! You need to deliver this in a clear and concise way so that people have no other choice other than to choose your business.
Being found
Doing business in 2017 and beyond has never been easier. Easier does not guarantee success it just means that there are a plethora of ways to make your business visible.
- When you think about your ideal clients – What social platforms do they use?
- If you are selling to a business, where are their key staff going to be found?
- You need to get your business in front of your ideal clients so they learn about who you are.
