Core web vitals – Googles 2021 algorithm update

As stated by Google in June last year and ready to start rolling out this month (June 2021) Google is updating its algorithm to include core web vitals.

While there are around 200 other ranking factors these core web vitals are part of the overall interaction between a website and its visitor/user.

It is also important to remember that these will be gold standards so potentially there may only be a small number of websites that pass all these areas easily.

What are core web vitals?

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) – A metric to track loading speed on a page

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) – A metric to track visual stability on a page

First Input Delay (FID) – A metric to track the time before your visitor interacts with a page

It is important that you keep in mind that there are around 200 ranking factors. Here we are just talking about a few of the new ones being introduced to Google’s Algorithm.

These Core web vitals – Googles 2021 algorithm update, also align with:

  • A mobile responsive website
  • SSL secure with HTTPS security
  • No intrusive interstitials (pop-ups)
  • Great relevant content

Keep in mind:

As stately directly by Google – A good page experience does not override having great relevant content.

How to improve your core web vitals

  • Ensure that you are using fast reliable website hosting
  • Enable full page caching
  • Defer javascript
  • Minify CSS and JS files
  • Optimise browser caching

At My Sassy Business, our hosting provider is continually developing new tools and service upgrades to make our client’s websites faster and safer. This includes all the items mentioned above when your website is created and hosted with us. Is your website performing as well as it could be?

Also…

  • Remove any unnecessary third party scripts
  • Optimise your images – It is good practice to always compress your images, use formats like JPEG2000, JPEG XR and WebP. Plus consider using static images rather than a slider.
  • Use compression
  • And there are more….

Did you know – your pages all rank differently

Over the years Google has become incredibly smart when it comes to ranking websites. For example, some pages on your website will rank better on a mobile device than on a desktop and vice versa.

As a business owner: Do you know what devices people use to search for your business? If it is mainly via a mobile device, how well does your website work?

A work in progress

Just as your business is constantly evolving and growing so too should your website. You should be taking the time to create and add new content, update it regularly and ensure your website is ranking in the search results by using SEO. A website is your businesses storefront and it needs to be enticing to the people who come to visit.

By outsourcing your SEO you have someone who is working on helping your website rank within the 200ish ranking factors. Remember that SEO is just one form of marketing you should be doing for your business.
